Pass back law

Post by QPR_John » Sat Jan 21, 2023 7:10 pm

We all know why it was introduced and it did it’s job. A minor infringement so an indirect free kick. But today it showed it has a flaw does anybody else agree with me it really should be a penalty. It was a deliberate foul to stop a goal scoring opportunity and being a foul in that the keeper cannot pick the ball up as any other player why not a penalty and a red card.

That would be very harsh.

However, a free kick 6 yards from goal with 11 players on the line and rushing at the ball is unlikely to succeed. An indirect free kick from the penalty spot would be much better. Yesterday, we tried to shoot, and the ball was blocked (no surprise). The intelligent thing would have been to play it back for someone to strike it as the 11 defenders moved away from goal, and thus created space. that would be much more likely to result in a goal.

You'd think, wouldn't you, that the team would have a plan for this admittedly rare occurence.
I wonder if Steff had been on the pitch we may have tried something different.
However, hindsight is a wonderous thing,

Cannot see how that would be harsh. It’s an infringement that in this case stopped a goal scoring opportunity no less than any where else on the field. In fact more so than an attacker impeded well outside the box. It is simple, an outfield player who handles the ball inside the box gives away a penalty by the laws of the game that states handling the ball is an offence. The pass back law clearly states a keeper cannot pick the ball up if passed back by a team mate so what is the difference,. In fact if a keeper picks the ball up from team mate outside the box it is a direct free kick and a possible red card but if it occurred inside the box it is an indirect free kick with as in yesterdays case a wall only a few yards from the kick. Where’s the logic in that.
