perhaps if you had experienced this throughout your entire life, as had your family and friends, you might have a less cavalier attitude about it. |

Oh im definitely boring middle class white guy but I don't think you have to be a black/asian/whatever person to recognize that being called bad names much of your life is terrible. |

You're not wrong there Arthur, it doesn't even take all your life. For me the memories of when it happened whilst growing up in the 70's and 80's, particularly the hatred, anger, threat and violence that could accompany it mean that any race based insult will very likely be quite emotive for me. Of course it all depends on context, but the initial emotional reaction is not something you can consciously control, you can only decide how to react to that emotional reaction.
So if it's all now illegal, so be it, personally I didn't even know it was until this case!! (That's how much we 'coloureds' are demanding extra protection Glover)
I can understand why, from a certain limited perspective, that the likes of Glover feel that Suarez was harshly treated (although I might add that the length of his ban was mostly due to his constant story changing and blatant lying to the inquiry) but the fact is if he'd said that to a Sunday League team with black players he probably wouldn't have made it back to the dressing room. I understand the arguments of the Don's and Davef's but there is a naturally a strong reaction to aggressive (verbal or otherwise) racism and that's not about to change. It's no good bringing race into it and then complaining when you get a reaction.
When you use any sort of language aimed to be inflammatory there's often consequences. _________________ "I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality" - Martin Luther King, Jr. |

Few who post on here probably consider themselves to be racist although, as DAVEf points out, most will be guilty of racist thought or behaviour from time to time. This is the modern world, but the seventies was a different place. I for one was very racist up until around the age of fifteen, I guess; probably not in deed but certainly in thought and word.
Then I learnt to think for myself and realised that the 'black wanton fool-born ratsbanes' I met were wanton fool-born ratsbanes in spite of, not because of, their colour. Much like their white counterparts.
And to give glover he's not so much a slavering racist and someone who's expressing the thoughts that many people have - often fuelled by the likes of the Mail. And things are only going to get better if we discuss this sort of thing in the open.
The French are still wanton fool-born ratsbanes, mind. _________________ I'm Ray Gardner. I drink Blackcurrant Tango. Come and get me! |

Sad to say but I saw many black people suffer in the seventies because they believed (had been conned into believing) that the white man was their enemy (or Asians where there were no suitable whites) and all black people were brothers. And that gave an easy run to those blacks who happened to be evil crooks (though, since they happily cheated anyone, they could have been excused from being accused of being rascist). |
