An ever increasing population that has a basic need for food, warmth and shelter. All of which needs to be generated / manufactured and transported. Power generation, food transportation and the manufacture of steel / aluminium / cement feature quite prominently on the CO2 emissions 'league table'. Beyond that we have the madness of (debt fueled) consumerism, with its globalised manufacturing network, stoking the fire even further. How much Chinese tat, with its in-built obsolescence, does one really need?

When I was a lad, you were happy to get your hands on locally produced strawberries for a short period around the time of Wimbledon. Now, they 'need' to be flown in from South Africa etc. in order to provide an all year round supply. All in the name of consumer choice. Whatever happened to the concept of seasonality?

Despite having the technology to home work or video conference, I wonder how many unnecessary motorway miles / air miles continue to be racked up via commuting and business trips?

As EL quite rightly points out, all Governments can do is seize upon this issue as a golden opportunity to apply stealth taxes. Rolling Eyes

A big NO to the concept of growth is a must. Recognition that this planet can only support a finite population is long overdue.

And there, as they say, lies the Rub.

If you were in your early 20's, perhaps recently married and looking at starting a family, you might be far less concerned about filling up the planet.

And possibly less negative generally, what with such negativity usually being linked to grumpy oldness etc Razz

Absolutely agree. I'm about to read Schumacher's 'Small is Beautiful', a book I've been meaning to read for decades. Schumacher's ideas appear to have come back into vogue - unsurprising given the economic mess we're in.

The point being, IMO, that (as yet) the government can't tax you for having/ not having a baby

The Australian government continue to perpetuate the "populate or perish" post WW2 message by rewarding reproduction with a "Baby Bonus" of nearly $5,500.

What about those who are childless having their taxes used to pay others' child benefit (not to mention the costs for maternity/paternity leave and education costs). Especially if they really don't give a flying whatsit about what happen to England, the Earth or future generations after they've popped off).

Smokers and drinkers are heavily penalised for their anti-social selfishness while reproducers are rewarded (it's not as if we NEED more people especially with a seemingly plentiful supply of ready grown and educated folk waiting/trying to get in) angel
