Surely Israel is just sitting, with some good level of (often deniable) regularl support, where it was placed by the West as the first line of defence against any perceived Arab/Islamic threat?

Apart from the fact that Turkey has, in more recent times, been groomed in taking that role, does anyone believe Israel wouldn't be sacrificed (politically, militarily and/or economically) if it suited the needs of the USA (and the EU, IE the UK, France and Germany)?
