Lucky Millwall

Post by beaglebum » Sun Mar 18, 2018 2:20 pm

I see that Millwall are just 4 pts off the playoffs now after a run of 7 wins/2 draws in their last 9 games since 3rd Feb. Don't get me wrong, they've done really well and of course it's not easy to win games in this league. Plus they've done us a big favour by beating those teams. But how lucky are they that they've played mainly relegated threatened teams in that run, which by winning them has built untold confidence so now on the brink of the playoffs. So they've gained 23pts
2-0 v Reading
1-1 v Cardiff
1-0 v Birham
2-1 v Sweds
1-0 v Burton
1-1 V Sunderland
2-1 v Hull
1-0 v Brentford
2-0 v Barnsley

Whereas in that same run, we've played
1-0 v Barnsley
1-2 V Wolves
2-0 V Bolton
1-2 V Sheff Utd
2-5 V NForest
1-1 V Derby
1-0 V Sunderland
3-1 V AVilla
2-2 V Fulham

So we've gained 11 points and 12 less than them, although we've played 5 promotion chasing teams in that run. Before 3rd Feb we were 1 point ahead of them. I do wonder, if we had that run of playing those relegation threatened teams, one after the other, if we could've got on the same winning run as they have, as other than the Forest result we've done OK in those last 9 games, beating those struggling teams.

I know they now have some tough fixtures ahead, but with the confidence this run has given them, they could go on and win them. Lucky Millwall!

Millwall aren't lucky, they're just playing and achieving the results that we should have been getting.
Our last 2 games now point to that happening.

No like I said, I appreciate they have to beat the teams in front of them, but you have to admit, playing relegation threatened teams week after week has certainly given them the wins they needed. I bet no other team in the league has had such easy games in a row. I wonder had they played a few more better teams in that run of games if they'd still have won as many. Probably not.

It's still an impressive run no matter who they are playing. Six away wins in a row

Both teams have played 38 games, so I'm not sure what focusing solely on the last 9 really tells us.

They're 11 points above us, and took four points off us in our head-to-head games. Nothing lucky about that.

I see what you're driving at about their building a head of steam for the run-in, but in the scheme of things - correct me if I'm wrong - Millwall have to play exactly the same teams, home and way, as ourselves, do they not? (Except playing themselves, rather obviously.)

Their narrow victories of late remind me of our Warnock promotion year, which feels like a nostalgic aeon ago now. But I agree that, if we add a clever and nimble striker who can score 15+ next season (very much in the Gary Penrice mould, in fact - could he scout himself?), and strengthen one or two other positions, we could have a real go next campaign. If Sylla were injury-free, adjusted to our system and professionally focussed, I wonder if he could yet be that man. The possible loss of Smithies, however, would be worrying to me, as he must have literally saved us a similar number of points this season. I think the board should pull out all the stops with his contract - ditto Luongo and Freeman - and I'd say Smyth's should be seriously upgraded too. Chair, Eze and possibly Oteh are also very much part of this new Rangers mix. In other words, take a deep breath and try not to sell anyone. (Or almost anyone - I guess JET can take off from any convenient airstrip, rather sadly, and I'd probably listen to offers for Cousins and one or two of Onuoha, Lynch and Perch.)

This close season is the time that Hoos and Les are really going to be judged for their strategic decisions, and I hope Ollie isn't just going to be their stooge. If it's two steps forwards and then three back, however, they should walk!

I would also add that we need 2 OK strikers to compliment our
promising youngsters.

Is the club that much in need of flattery right now? :)

Why? Do you think I should return to my default position?
I can easily pick holes in what's happening at Rangers, trust me!

"compliment", "complement" - unless you are being ironic, in which case well played!

Ironically, looking at those teams Millwall have played and picked up 23 pts from we have also picked up 23 points based on the last fixtures against those teams (ie our most recent games against Cardiff and Burton and not the earlier season fixtures). Of course our games have been intermingled throughout the season and the wins against Reading and Hull and the draw v SWeds as they were right at the beginning of the season. But had we had played those same fixtures in succession like they have had and got on a winning run then who knows what that could've done for morale (which incidentally is probably quite high now). I guess we won't know a full comparison until all 46 games have been played.

Indeed. There'll be a better balanced squad next season even with a few having to be sold. Im confident we'll bring in some decent lads

Smith and Washington have scored more than millwalls front 2 (Morrison and Gregory)

It just shows that a team cannot just rely on the forwards. It is only recently that other members of our team are starting to score.
