Our makeshift defence

Post by stainesranger » Tue Oct 31, 2017 10:41 pm

I think Robinson is different class. Big, strong and comfortable on the ball. What a player if we can keep him fit. A revelation at centre half this season. Like a new signing.

I’m liking bidwell more and more each game. Strong, committed and consistent.

Sheffield United had their chances, don’t get me wrong, but those three were great today.

Honourable mention to cousins who did well on the right too.

Baptiste MOTM. Winners all night long. He’s starting to remind me of a Dunne/Nelsen type signing. His pace has gone (if he ever had any), but his positional sense is second to none.

Legs are temporary, class is permanent.

And he cost sweet fa, they often turn out to be the best signings.

In a few more years he will achieve Clint Hill status ....

We really must watch a different game. He was awful tonight and his substitution should have come an hour before it did. We really picked up the pace and looked far more of a threat once Darnell came on. I appreciate that he is returning from a long term injury and central midfiled is his position but based on tonights performance we were lucky it didn't cost us anything.

Awful is harsh but honourable mention is flattering! 6/10 for Cousins for me.

Luongo on the other hand was class, MOTM by a mile for me.

Agree that Bidwell was once again excellent. He seems to be growing in confidence.

...I think that Cousins is playing completely out of his favourite position.....I really doubt that he is an external right midfielder/right back....

Thought Bidwell was superb last night: really impressed with his reading of the game, and his distribution was superb. Robinson and Baptiste looked pretty comfortable too - the only time I was really worried about an equaliser was up to the point in the second half when Cousins went off. He was clearly targeted by Sheff Utd as a weak point, and we were lucky they couldn't take advantage.

MOTM between Baptiste, Robinson and Bidwell. Can't decide which one. They all had blinders. Thought Cousins did OK too. Got some decent tackles in first half and got forward, getting one or two crosses in at a very early stage of the match. Roll on Forest but it will still be tough up there.

All the shouts for Bidwell are perfectly valid. He stepped in to the back three at Sunderland, when Robinson got hurt, and was excellent, so I had no qualms about him playing there last night, and he did a superb job again. It's curious that we seem to have unearthed a pair of terrific centre backs in Bidwell and Robinson, both of whom are allegedly left backs!

Yes - given that neither can pass that well, maybe centre back makes much more sense that full back in both cases.

On Cousins, have I lost my mind or has he only just come back from injury and was he not just playing against one of the best sides in the league. And playing out of position.

Jeez! Maybe give him a game or two before we start writing him off?

Gonna give Ollie a slight headache when all the defenders are fit.
