Sam Field

Post by deadendjob » Mon Mar 22, 2021 4:55 pm

QPR boss Mark Warburton says he is hopeful the club can strike a deal to make Sam Field’s move a permanent one at the end of the season.

Field, 22, has impressed since his arrival from West Brom late on transfer deadline day on February 1, scoring on his debut against Brentford and adding some height and defensive nous to the central midfield area.

The former England youth international has another year on his existing deal at Albion, who look poised to make an immediate return to the Championship this season.

Field was loaned out by the Baggies to Charlton last season and struggled for game time under both Slaven Bilic and Sam Allardyce upon his return to the West Midlands – and has said he is keen to be at a club where he will play regularly at this stage of his career.

His QPR loan agreement, unlike in the case of fellow loanee Stefan Johansen, includes an option to buy.

And Warburton says he is “very keen” for the club to activate it after another strong performance in the 1-1 draw at Reading.

“That would be a job for people above my pay grade who do the hard stuff – I do the easy stuff,” Warburton said.

“But I would be very keen and I know he is really enjoying his football here.

“He’s settled very well into the squad. He can play at centre-half in a two or a three and, as he has shown, in midfield.

“He’s six foot two, has that physicality you need, so he ticks a lot of boxes for us.

“I have been delighted with his contribution. I know he is enjoying his football and being around the squad. They have embraced him as a personality, so so far so good.”

Warburton will give his players four days off this week to help them recover from a gruelling run of games that has seen them play 12 times in 48 days since the 2-1 win over Watford on February 1.

They return to action on April 2 – which is Good Friday – to face Coventry at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium before embarking on a trip to Nottingham Forest on Easter Monday.

The time off will allow both Jordy de Wijs (groin) and Dominic Ball (hip), who were both forced off at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday, time to recover.

I found two things a little strange in that interview.

First, as the article states, when Sam Field signed on loan the club's announcement was that it was done with a view to sign him permanently. Field himself has pretty much said from day one he wants to stay. Yet, Warburton sounds distinctly unsure. I hope the board haven't changed their minds on him.

Secondly, he mentions Field being able to play at CB. Actually, Field has only played four times at CB in his professional career; three times in early rounds of the ELF cup, once in the Prem league 2. All of these were back in 2018. I do hope Warburton isn't planning on using him at the back. He really shouldn't have to given Kakay can play in a back 3 and Ball has 61 CB appearances to his name.

Is that how you read it DM?

I'm sure you're right but it wasn't so much whether Warburton wanted Field that I was wondering about but the '...people above my pay grade' as he put it.
