Luke Freeman

Post by ZENITH R » Mon Jun 24, 2019 7:37 pm

Lots of rumours that Luke is off to Sheffield United. Can I just say ... the fact we signed him for £300,000 is irellivant when considering how much we should be prepared to accept for him moving to Sheffield.

Personally, I wouldn’t take anything less than £5 million.

Completely agree ZENITH.

I had resigned myself to Freeman leaving anyway. I totally get where we are as a club and the issues with FFP.

But we’re not going to go anywhere if we keep selling at these silly prices being quoted.

To think that Leeds are about to get £25,000,000 for one of their players - and we will have got little over £10,000,000 for Charlie Austin, Alex Smithies & Luke Freeman combined. Madness.

Dave Mc makes some very apposite points here. I find it difficult not to agree with him: https://twitter.com/davidmcintyre76/sta ... 1344306179

Dave Mc is a brilliant, well informed journalist. The best one out there IMO.

But I don’t agree with him here. We all know the model moving forwards is to buy players cheap and sell on for a profit. In our hearts, most knew that Freeman would be off this year - so it’s no surprise to see him go.

He makes the point about earning the right to sell high, but I really don’t follow. You look at the prices paid for average players elsewhere, and you can’t help but feel we could be doing better.

Austin for £4m.
Smithies for £3.5m.
Freeman for £3m / £4m.

This really isn’t good business.

Luton are about to get £12m for a defender that hasn’t played above League One level.

Portsmouth sold a CB last week for £5m.

There are plenty of other examples. You can’t help but ask questions over who is sanctioning these deals.

...the point (and the problem) is not selling our best players, but actually replacing them....as DMc says other clubs sold their best players (at that moment) but managed to progress....so it is all about scouting and finding substitutes ....and that is worrying me cos I have not seen much in the recent years...

Surely this depends on how you view it? In financial terms, Freeman was an excellent buy as we'll make 10x what we paid (although do Stevenage have a sell-on fee)

Luongo, I'm not so sure! Was the reported fee for him and Gladwin £3.5m? I doubt we'll recoup that.

The bulk of that valuation was for Gladwin.

Even if it was - add up the amount we recoup for the pair and I bet we make a loss. Luongo would have a decent value if he wasn't in his last year of contract.

You'd think for the sake of a tenner, the man would have given it up by now. Maybe it's a pride thing.

I reckon we could crowdfund it if the fella's genuinely down on his luck.

I think Esox might be right, as I seem to recall Swindon wanted to avoid a big sell-on to Spurs. So buying them as a job lot, with the bulk of the valuation on Gladwin left them with more money from a reasonable transfer fee.

Well if that's true, Spurs were well and truly shafted. I'd love to know how Swindon justified that valuation for Gladwin, who'd basically had one full season as a professional after an unremarkable career in non-league football.
