I was once spoke to Simon Barker about this at a player of the year dinner in the 90's.
He said that, although, he and the team did hear crowd noise and chants, it never really effected them positively or negatively. Once on the pitch he just got on with his job.
I suppose the effect probably varies per person.

I think that home victory against Chelsey had a fair bit to do with what the fans were doing.

Absolutely. Which Chel*** player refused to take a corner at the Ellerslie end because of the noise?

That win had nothing to do with crowd noise; that was pure intimidation that day and boy, did they buckle! We were vile! :D

IIRC it was Mata and Fat Frank ended up taking it. I havea vague recollection of Eto'o? saying in an interview after the game that it was the hostile and intimidating atmosphere he had ever played in; which considering some of the places he must have played is saying something.
It's not the despair that will kill you, it's the hope.

Watching Glastonbury and struck by the thought that if Gerry Francis, in another life ,was a lead singer of a band he would be the front man of The Cure.

...I think the noise can intimidate and affect the ref more likely....I have seen some decisions given under the influence of the crowd, cards, penalties, free-kicks..just remember last season, the penalty at Bristol....

Please do not mention that penalty. It cost me £565 in a lost bet. Who was the ref that day? He's going on the list. :x
