Salary Cap

Post by 222gers » Sat Jun 01, 2019 8:07 am

According to the Times, Championship clubs are to discuss a salary cap at their annual meeting. If implemented however, I suppose it would be at a level above which we could afford anyway.
The article says we were deducted points for breaching FFP, so I guess they haven't exactly done their homework.

Something needs to be done, I heard somewhere that the Prem as a whole made a net profit of 500m last season & the championship as a whole made a net loss of 600m.

How long can it carry on..

How I long for the days when we just walked over to the ground clutching a shilling entrance money, tuppence for a programme and a few pennies for Percy Dalton's peanuts. We never gave a thought to the clubs finances and didn't need to, just enjoyed the match. Now all we do is fret over FFP, players's contracts and the like.

Total wage bill for a championship club for a year £15m.

Job done.

Works well in the NFL, anything to even out the current grotesque imparity would be welcome, it would need a long overdue re-think of FFP.

I won't hold my breath.

FFP needs a total overhaul. I agree with the principle of what they’re trying to do, but the current rules are ridiculous.

A salary cap would be a great start.

Yeah but the NFL is a closed loop. Completely different. No promotions or relegations. Also the fact the premier league and football have different rules and regs makes everything so much more complicated.

I've heard it's quite useful for tickling those hard to reach places.

Jimmy Hill will be turning in his grave.
It's simple. Score more goals than they do.

True. I think Jimmy was more of a traditionalist where celery was concerned.

Ah the good old days when the Loftus Road pitch would be covered in it once a season. :D

I'm not sure growing King Edward's on it during the close season in the 70's was such a good idea though, however much we got for the crop down Shepherd's Bush Market

I've always thought a salary cap may help level the playing field a bit, but unlike the NFL there is no collegiate draft system for football, so in isolation I can' only see it working in reverse. A promising player is offered (because of cap restrictions) the same contract at QPR or Man U, whose's he going to choose? The only incentive to come to a smaller club is financial... And that hasn't always worked out for us.

I have a radical idea but I'll keep it to myself for the avoidance of ridicule.

If you can demonstrate a development pathway that's likely to lead to regular first team football sooner rather than later, that would surely be a selling point for some. They'd have to weigh that up against the better facilities and possibly support staff available at a bigger club, but it would give smaller clubs more of a fighting chance.
