DCM

Post by dm » Tue May 21, 2019 2:39 pm

By my reckoning, the club needs to bring in around 6 new players into the first team squad this summer and the most important of them will be a defensive central midfielder. We saw the difference Cameron made once he got up to speed and it's clear to me the team needs to sign someone similar - physical, experienced and mobile. Should Warburton play 433, as he's done with his previous teams, it will be even more important to find the right player for this position; and to find one who can pass out from the back.

If we're spending any money at all, presumably from a sale or two, let it be spent on a DCM.

Agree it's critical, although in a 4-3-3 we're desperate for someone who can play as the central striker. If we could be confident in his fitness i'd happily see Hall there (as i would one of the CB positions) but that feels like a gamble.

Going off last season's performances, I reckon we a desperate for someone in just about every position.

Well, we haven't had a competent striker for how many years?

3 since we had a good one. Wells was a competent striker who might have done better with better supply and Polter has a great record before and after playing for us.

Sylla if he had been used properly would have scored goals for us. Chery was decent too.

I liked Sylla and felt he was handled badly by Holloway and was give unfair stick. However it's also telling that McClaren also didn't fancy him and he seemed completely out of the first team picture, maybe the damage was already don or maybe the suggestions about his application in training were fair. A shame.

Chery was decent, not really a striker though.

There were some rumours kicking around that Cameron was going to be coming back on loan for another season.
I'd be happy with that.

I agree we need a decent DCM but no way is it a priority for me. And Scowen or Luongo should be good enough for the job if Warburton coaches them well. An out and out poacher is a priority for me.
Come on you Sooopa ........

Indeed a striker is a priority too but given we conceded 71 goals this season, and 70 goals the season before, a DCM should be our number one target. The only time we really tightened up was when Cameron was playing DCM.

If we play 433 next season, we must have a player who knows what they're doing to screen the defence. Luongo and Scowen can play there but both want to play the box to box role to which they're better suited. Not only so but, they lack the physicality and height needed at DCM in the Championship.

Agree with DM. I think Warburton's approach to coaching seems to be focused on conditioning and giving them the environment to develop, rather than a more technical approach. In any case, they might be able to change their style, but no manager has a magic wand to make that work.
I don't think it's guaranteed that we will play 433 (W did 4141 at forest). I don't think Scowen and Luongo are safe in possession in a 2 and need support from other areas when they do (eg pull back a striker, or lose some width by playing wide men narrower).
Striker would be nice but we had Wells last year, couldn't really hope for better as a signing, and it didn't work. It points to problems elsewhere on the pitch, really. (Besides, at least one of the kids would probably manage to match his tally.)

It would be nice to think I played any small part in him returning but I doubt it. :D He did emphasise just how much he enjoyed playing for us and would have loved to stay if the clubs could sort something out. I fear knocking £25-30k a week off his wages may not be in his, or our, future.
