75/76 Anguish

Post by Montag » Fri May 03, 2019 10:12 am

The 43rd anniversary of the Great league robbery is tomorrow. I'm old enough to have experienced it but looking back on the table I realised that we lost the league by one goal. One off-side goal scored by Norwich. Had that game ended 2-2 we would have been level on points with the dippers with equal goal difference but we had scored more goals. League champs followed surely by European cup glory. Why doesn't the pain go away? aniwall Like the Cup Final and Tossenham.

I remember listening to it on a girl friends radio. The tension was awful. The co-commentator, Alan Ball I think, was saying the Wolves had to keep hold of the ball, they were just belting the ball into touch and Liverpool came back at them. Once Liverpool equalised the tension was released, I knew the floodgates were open.
Bloody Naaaaardge, Bloody Wolves !

I remember listening to the Norwich game on the radio and then the Wolves game, absolutely gutted both times.

Nowadays our anger would be aimed at the match officials rather than Norwich for that offside goal.

In reality it was a season of two halves, average first half but storming second half that took us to the top of the table. If one of those early drawn home games had been a win.

Great side, well managed, happy days, great memories, we won’t ever see that again.

But the good news is that promotion from Division 1 to the Championship under Ollie really was just as much fun. Promotion with Neil Warnock, we shall have some fun again one day.

If he brings up the game in 1986 (of which we do not speak) I'll fetch the tar if you bring the feathers...

The game when we beat Chelsea 6-0? :)

I wonder if we will ever get anywhere near a PL title or FA Cup final again. In those days there was some sort of success for us once every so many years.

I doubt it very, very much, the dice are loaded against anyone outside the top 6 - Leicester's achievement was a once in a lifetime event. And now you aren't even really allowed to spend money even if you have it.

I remember the home game before the Norwich match (was it Middlesbrough?), with our fans singing 'If you're going to Norwich, clap your hands.' It was 'only' Norwich, so we all thought that with the form that the we were in, a win at Norwich would not be a problem. Oh dear.
I remember the Wolves v Liverpool game on the radio, too. The second half only, of course, in those days. When I switched on at H-T it was 1-0 to Wolves. I began to think 'So, this is what it is like when you win the league...'

Still loved that season, but, the pain of the last 15 minutes of the Wolves v Liverpool game will never go away.
It's simple. Score more goals than they do.

I know it is only a football result, but I do think that the Budgie game and the last fifteen at Wolves really did leave a scar on my 13 year old psyche, that I'm not sure has or ever will heal. I think about those two days more than is healthy... I know that. I have never forgiven those gits in Norfolk. It certainly taught me that life is unfair - so that was a lesson taught early. But if they ever invent a Time Machine... you know the rest. Am I being too melodramatic? 8)

Good heavens, no - perfectly reasonable.
