No replays in 5th round

Post by IJM » Sat Feb 09, 2019 9:19 pm

i was speaking to several fellow R's this afternoon and it would appear that none of them knew that Fridays game v Watford will definately not go to a replay. It is my understanding that the FA have stated that 5th round ties will go straight to extra time and penalties should the scores be level after 90 or 120 minutes. Am I alone in thinking this, or is it general knowledge and I just have 'thick' friends at LR ?

I think you are correct: it's to help the big teams who are in the much more important European competitions.

Will Wells be at the top of our list should Friday's match go to penalties ?

Yep, that’s the way I understood it too.

Desperately hoping it doesn’t go that far. In normal time I can catch the midnight ferry home... ET puts me on the 3am crossing

I think the 6th is the same. Hope there'll be extra penalty practice this week. Just in case.

I believe that this was announced quite a while back. Just a couple of friends after the game discussing it but the motif was along the lines of it's our best chance as there is no replay.
It's not the despair that will kill you, it's the hope.

On yesterday's showing there won't be much need for worry about the 6th round,
extra time or a replay.

Gutted we won't have the opportunity of a replay at the Hertfordshire theatre of dreams.

It's a long time since I've been there: they were still making away fans take a half hour walk through the allotments to get to the away end then.

Didn't we have a marathon of replays in the 5th round against Nottm. Forest in the 70's?

Wasn't it Coventry City ? I remember beating them at LR, I think it was 3-2 with our Stan getting the late winner.

No doubt some stato will look it up for us.

We are busy. Too busy for extra time and penalties. Too busy for an evening at Vicarage Road. So, let's get through in the 90 minutes.
It's simple. Score more goals than they do.

The cup run in 77 - 78 which ended in a 2 - 0 loss after a second replay in the fifth round against Nottingham Forest in fact felt longer due to the replay in the fourth we had against West Ham which we won under the lights at Loftus Road 6 -1.... Happy days!

The cup run was a source of light in a pretty desperate season where we staved off relegation on the last day with a 0 - 0 draw against Leeds...

West Ham went down instead of us.... Alas we joined them in the 2nd Division the following season...

I remember that replay, Systems. They scored first, I think - Pop Robson, at the LR end, but, we got the upper hand and thrashed them. Lovely. I think Mervyn Day was in goal for them. He had been caught out in a recent game, coming miles out of his goal and then getting lobbed - all on TV. Couldn't believe that he was doing the same thing at Loftus Road - as if to put two fingers up to his critics.

Even though I was only 14, went to Upton Park for the original cup tie and ended up in the home end! Very dodgy....

Ended 1 - 1 but my abiding memory of the match was Phil Parkes saving a shot from point blank range to get the replay.... No wonder they paid £765K the following season.... Says a lot he's a legend at Wet Spam as well...

The replay? Leighton James free kick on the edge of the box in front had shades of bend it like Beckham.... Sweet memories
