Nothing to see here......

Post by Stans left foot » Wed Oct 03, 2018 7:09 am

Just for some perspective......

Just been on the Reading FC Boards,

Wow, what a surprise, they have exactly the same people posting on there as we do here....

woeful team selection
woeful playing style
woeful manager
end of the world forecasting for their club.

The only difference I could find was that their views had a more moderate circumspection - ie we are far more passionate and demanding and rightly so, - you've got to have some passion and commitment.

You Rrrrssss etc etc etc

It's also worth remembering that Paul Clement was trumpeted by many as our dream manager not too long ago. It's not so easy getting the right man to turn around a struggling club.

Yep, I'll hold my hand up to that one. It appears that we dodged a bullet there.
In my defence, I remember touting Eddie Howe for a future manager before his stock took off and Chris Wilder before he became Sheff. Utds. manager.
I also don't think my preferred choice of next manager, Michael Appleton, would join us in our current financial state. I am curious as to whether Paul Hall could do a good job with the first team with the remit we all thought SMC was to work with.

I didn't mean to dig anybody out. For what it's worth, I'd have been quite happy for Paul Hurst to take over in the summer, and it doesn't seem to be working out too well for him at Ipswich. Likewise Rowett looked a good bet 18 months ago, and is struggling at Stoke, despite having spent heavily in the summer. Whoever you appoint, it's always a gamble to some extent.

Yes, manager selection is an absolute minefield.

I think the majority on here would have accepted Clement with open arms given his pedigree and - OK things can change - but thus far his record at Derby and Reading has been lukewarm at best. I accept things can change quickly with 2 or 3 wins but often a managers journey is at the behest of things outside of his control, most notably injuries and budgets.

Ditto Rowett, ( Derby's becoming a common denominator with all these guys ) - I well recall visiting Derby and a team of supporters told me how delighted they were with Clough Jnr, since then they spent a fair bit and got through 8 managers in 10 odd years.

The only club where striking lucky appears to have worked every time is Watford.?

Having said that, I always see the Madejski stadium as a sole-less dump of a ground stuck by the M4...ditto Stoke, maybe that's just me but I don't think either reflect very well what a football club should be about.

There is a lamentable lack of good seafood in the stadium, I agree, and/or a strange absence of the undersides of people's feet. Still, that's what fake hoops gets you.

Yep, i thought Clement was the man to go for, i'm very grateful of his greed and our limited means on that one. Likewise Rowett seemed like the one who'd got away after we appointed Holloway just before his sacking. I thought JFH was the right type of manager for us to be looking at too. I really wanted Uwe Rosler a while back too.
