Wheeled out the door

Post by qprhoops81 » Tue Aug 07, 2018 11:59 am

gone to pompy for a year

Pompey have signed David Wheeler on a season-long loan deal from QPR.

The 27-year-old winger will wear the number 22 shirt during his time at Fratton Park.

Blues boss Kenny Jackett said: “He’s an attacking wide player, who can be used on either side and has an impressive goalscoring record.

“He hasn’t quite made the breakthrough at QPR, but had a number of seasons at Exeter and was very keen to come here.

“It’s our first loan signing and supplements the good base of our own players that is already here.

“We’re pleased to bring his attacking qualities into our group and are grateful to QPR for letting him come here.”

Wheeler joined QPR from Exeter 12 months ago and has scored one goal in nine appearances for the Championship outfit.

The former England Schoolboys international played youth team football with Brighton, then began his senior career by featuring for Lewes and Staines.

He signed for Exeter in the summer of 2013 following a successful trial and played a total of 171 times, finding the target on 39 occasions.

Wheeler’s final season with the Grecians included a run of eight goals in seven successive games, while he also hit the net at Wembley in a play-off final defeat.

He twice grabbed winning goals against Pompey at Fratton Park, settling encounters in September 2015 and January 2017.

That could be the best thing for him. He has been out for a year with injury and the first time he makes a mistake in a game whilst getting back into it will have "fans" getting on his case and using it as a stick to attack the club with. At Pompey he will just be a player whilst he finds his feet again.

Welcome to the QPR Hokey Cokey. Instead of “ in out, in out, shake it all about” it's “ out out, out out, shake it all about “

I agree. Considering his injuries I can see why a loan spell away and regular football is in everyone’s best interests.

I thought he looked pretty good when I saw him play for us though.

Don't sign anyone and let someone else go out on loan, who might do a job for us if we have a few injuries.

Good plan

How many injuries do think we need for us to miss Wheeler?

We're better off for wide players than any position - we have all these who can play there: Luke Freeman, Pawel Wszolek, Eberechi Eze, Ilias Chair, Massimo Luongo, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Paul Smyth, Ryan Manning, Olamide Shodipo, and even (gulp)...Conor Washington. Mind you, knowing our luck we'll probably end up needing to draft in an U23 player.

Think it is a fair call to give Wheeler more game time out to adjust back after injury - BOS and Freeman probably have first call at the moment, with Smyth likely to have an
increasing part to play.
