Possibly only 9 points needed to avoid relegation ?

Post by IJM » Mon Jan 15, 2018 5:55 pm

I know the subject title will raise a few eyebrows, but looking at the current league table after Saturday's games and purely looking at matters from an analytical point of view, it is possible that 9 points could achieve our safety, let me explain :

Currently Burton occupy 22nd place with 24 points from 27 games. If they continue to accumulate points at 0.89 points per game, then multiply that by 46 games, and it gives you a total of 41 points - plus of course our goal difference of minus 6 is far greater than their goal difference of minus 25.

Applying this simple formular will see Birmingham finish on 39 points and Sunderland on 37 points.

Last season Blackburn were relegated on 51 points, but I don't think this season will be as high as that and whilst the above three teams might accumulate points at a greater rate for the remainder of the season, bearing in mind any January transfers etc., it does nonetheless bring greater comfort to us suffering R's fans that maybe, just maybe, our season will not end in disaster.

As a final thought, Birmingham's home thrashing of 0-3 v Derby, Sunderland's big loss of 0-4 v Cardiff (did you see how cheesed off Chris Coleman looked on the touchline - perhaps he should have renewed his contract with the Wales job), and Burton's poor performance v the Mighty Rangers, the confidence of the aforementioned squads must be brittle to say the least.

I like your positive analytic view but the worry is last season Rotherham were virtually relegated by Xmas so it was only 2 places up for grabs. This yr all 3 could easily go on a run and teams like Sunderland, hull, Birmingham and even Bolton perhaps shouldn't be where they are with their resources or recent history.

I think 6 more wins will do it. Let's try and get there quicker this time!

And Sunderland,Birmingham and Bolton will go on a winning run.

Things will get worrying.

But six wins is got to be possible

We have these three to come at home so it's up to the Rangers to pulverise them.

.....and if they do, which is a big 'if', what about Burton, Barnsley, Hull etc., they can't all go on winning runs.

Last season, there were teams at the bottom who hit a bit of late form which made it a bit squeaky bum time, but my original post was intended to show that the 22nd relegation position will not be as high as Blackburn's 51 points. I'm certainly not getting complacent and we should look after ourselves in terms of getting points on the board, but our recent haul of 11 points from 6 games should give us reason for a bit of optimism.

Spring is impending and a young man's fancy turns, as always, to the question of “ can the Rangers stay up? “

Since 2003/4 season of the three teams at the bottom at the end of the year two have been relegated and on five occasions all three.
