The Partido Popular, the ruling party in Spain, were formed from Francos government. They never dealt with their facist past, and never really wanted to. As a result Spain have never progressed to be what we might all consider to be a mature progressive democracy. The tactics employed by the police and Guardia are quite normal.

There will be no internal investigations into the actions we have all seen carried out by the police. The only prosecutions are likely to be against those doing the filming as recording law enforcement officers is an offence in Spain. Kicking pribbling idle-headed giglet out of someone is fine if you're in uniform though..

I'm not easily shocked these days but the indiscriminate riot police brutality against people waiting to vote was appalling.

I am very unhappy with the way much of the UK media have reported this as 'clashes' and 'riots'. It was nothing of the sort. The police were the perpetrators of aggression and violence.

The EU have to take issue with this. There are laws against state violence on its own citizens.

Plenty of discussions about the rights and wrongs of calling the referendum but none of that matters when you see the level of violence used by the Spanish police. In one video a policeman chasing a crowd stops to hit a young person who is standing to the side. Having knocked her to ground he returns and hits her again. A brutal assault with no justification whatsoever.

They're putting them in prison now. I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition!!!

Irrespective of whether you support Catalan independence or Spain's union, the imprisoning of democratically elected politicians should not only sound alarm bells across Europe but also force the EU to act against this shocking injustice by one of it's members. Sadly, Lee, I fear you're right in suggesting Brussels will do sweet FA.

This will be a nice bit of encouragement to the hard right in Europe and elsewhere.

The right dont need encouragement as it was they who won the last Spanish election fair and square. Socialism was well and truely rejected. Unfortunately, the corupt protectionist EU cartel need to release that people like to have a sense of identity and their one size fitzhall approach will cause their downfall, eventually!

I was thinking more of other European countries where the right must be looking rather longingly at Spain. Nonetheless, democracy seems to be the loser.

And the left.
Nobody asked the Kremlin for a vote before the Berlin Wall fell.

Russia looking longingly at Spain? I would have thought it would be the other way round.
