How are other clubs getting decent prices for their best players, then? This Leeds kid is not as good as Freeman - yet (if he ever will be). But their getting a ton of dosh for him? What are we doing wrong?
A better example is Luton.

They haven't played at Championship level for years, in fact they were playing non-league football as recently as 2013/14, yet they are selling players for a lot more than is being offered for Freeman.

Where Luton have played their football over the last few years is irrelevant surely. The kid is regarded as a better prospect than Freeman hence the higher fee. Folks on here are biased. Freeman is good but, at this stage in his career, he's probably not Premiership material which is why he's being considered by top end Championship sides (I consider Sheff Utd that) rather than the more established Premiership teams (West Ham, Southampton etc).

Same argument could be applied to Smithies. We all thought he was class but went to Cardiff and disappeared.

He’s 18 years old. The only time I saw him play I thought he looked very good. £8m is a bargain gamble for a club like Spurs. They won’t lose a penny on that fee.

Freeman is 9 years older and never played at the highest level.

The only doubt I’d have with Clarke would be his health. He was passing out a number of times and I’m not sure if he’s ever been diagnosed.

n22 is exactly right. We are biased towards Freeman. Anything over £5m would be a job bloody well done by the club.

It is to do with financial situation. Clubs who do not have short term need for cash can command higher prices. Everyone knows we are desperate. Without a bidding war we will not get a very good price for any of our players. Brentford are a great example of this. A very well run club, you only get to buy their players by paying a premium price. Why? Because they don’t need the money.
If that is the case where are we to get the money from?

Cant get it from player sales because we are short of cash so an easy touch
Cant get it from the owners because of FFP
Cant get it from using LF on non match days

Seems a bitter spiral to the bottom

To an extent although obviously the more players we profit on the less desperate we would be. I agree that Freeman is being overrated and his age not being taken into account. Let’s not forget we signed him for 300k not very long ago.

Thats it in a nut shell. We need to reduce our wage bill dramatically, sell players whenever we can and hang on till / if we move to a new stadium which will generate income from other than match days.

This attitude that we are 'desperate' compared to every other club outside of the Premier League just doesn't wash with me. After years of overspending we are now getting our house in order and this means we also need to sell our better players for good money as well as pay sensible wages: that's not desperate in my book.

Same argument could be applied to Smithies. We all thought he was class but went to Cardiff and disappeared.
...nooo...he did not really disappear...if you look carefully into their bench...you will spot him well seated, fresh and relaxed....

Richer certainly but I doubt he's relaxed. What a waste.

If he is sensible and does not want a rolls every year his contract will set him up for life and who would not want that so why not risk not playing for a few years. This is what the Premier League has done to football.

...yes...money over played football.....
players are not interested in playing, but more likely in enlarging their bank account....

Think we might still see Smithies in the Prem one day.
Freeman is an excellent Championship player and probably good enough for the premiership, if not exceptional. But if the tables were turned and QPR were in the premier league, how much would we expect to pay for him? I think we'd see anything above about 5 million as a bit steep and something of a gamble.

Peter S is spot on.

And while we are getting our house in order, we are subject to some stiff FFP targets over the next few years, so player sales are vital. A decent price would be a nice bonus, and unearthing another Sterling and getting a big fee would be very nice indeed.

Freeman expected to complete transfer to Sheffield United within the next 24 hours according to Sky. Hope we get a decent fee and reinvest them properly this time:) - And all the luck to Freeman, he has deserved his shot at PL

Sky apparently saying the fee will be three million plus add-ons. Depends of course what the add-ons consist of, but it looks to fall short of what we were hoping for. Yes, we are biased but we never seem to get a really good price for our players do we ? With Smith gone we have to bring in a striker or two with very little money to play with.

So Sky don't know the fee either?
